About knee braces

Knee braces are worn around a child’s knee joint to provide strength, stability and support. They are made from a wide variety of materials depending on the needs of the child. Knee braces can aid recovery by offloading the tissues around the joint, reduce pain and joint instability and aid in proprioceptive feedback.

Different Types of Knee Braces

Knee sleeves - Knee sleeves are the most common type of knee support used. They can be made from a range of materials such as neoprene, elastic yarns or variations of materials that provide compression and warmth for the knee. Knee sleeves have proven effective for proprioceptive feedback (the body's awareness of itself in space), thought to be effective in recovery and safer ambulation.

Prophylactic braces - Prophylactic, meaning to prevent disease, are designed to protect the uninjured knees from an injury that may occur as a result of a worsening/chronic condition. Designed for active use, the prophylactic brace aims to manage a variety of conditions, primarily through compression to manage inflammation in the joint when active and stability straps that can act as external ligaments for extra support.

Rehabilitative braces - Designed to limit movement whilst the knee is healing after surgery or injury. They protect and control knee movement during the rehabilitation process.

Knee ligament braces - These braces are provided to support children with ligament injuries. The function knee brace is designed to compensate for the damaged, torn or ruptured ligament to provide knee stability.

Unloader/Off-loader braces - This brace relies on force pressure systems to relieve medial or lateral compartment stress in the knee joint. It is commonly used to assist with conditions such as osteoarthritis.

What is the process to receive Knee Braces?

For a knee brace to work effectively, your child needs to be assessed in order to determine the most appropriate brace to treat their condition and fit their lifestyle and goals. Our paediatric orthotists will carry out a thorough assessment looking at medical history, muscle powers, range of movement and a gait assessment.

If a knee brace is deemed suitable for their needs, our orthotists will guide you and your child through the options available. Measurement for the knee brace will be taken.

Once the measurements have taken place your child will be booked in for a fitting session. During the appointment, we will teach you how to fit the brace correctly and how to look after the brace effectively.
