TurboMed for Children

What is a turbomed for Children?

The TurboMed is a custom built ankle foot orthoses (AFO). Designed to assist children who have drop foot, it is made from highly durable thermoplastics and is a popular choice for children who wish to remain active.

The TurboMed secures around the mid to upper shin area and has two supporting external struts extending downwards that can fit externally to most shoes. Unlike more traditional splints, the TurboMed only touches the skin in the calf region so it does not rub. The spring loaded system supports weakened muscles and also provides some stability. This all aids in promoting a natural walking or running pattern.

Benefits of TurboMed for Children:

  • The TurboMed provides a spring like assistance to weak muscles
  • It is lightweight, made from durable thermoplastics
  • Due to it being an exoskeleton design, fitting to the outside of the shoe without touching the foot or the ankle, there is no contact with skin. This is especially beneficial for people who may suffer from skin conditions as no rubbing or abrasion can happen.
  • A symmetrical design means it fits both the left and the right foot
  • This orthotic is very versatile and fits the majority of shoes.
  • This device is designed to be adaptable, easily conforming to uneven ground and slopes, ideal for active people.
  • Promoting a natural walking style

What is the process to receive a TurboMed for Children?

The process to receive a TurboMed would be:

  • Assessment including trial and measurements
  • Fitting
  • Review

Your orthotist will ask you questions about your child’s daily activities and medical history. The paediatric orthotist will undertake a gait examination and observe them walk, paying attention to any movements at their affected joints and making observations of how their body moves. Following this, your child’s treatment options and goals will be discussed and a prescription made. If the Turbomed is appropriate for your child, the orthotist will provide a free Turbomed trial using our trial kit. It is important that running style trainers or walking shoes are worn to the appointment. The orthotist will then take measurements of your child’s legs and a customised Turbomed can be ordered. Ideally, a sample trainer is sent away with the order to ensure a perfect fitting. A fitting appointment can then be arranged where the orthotist will check the fit, ensure comfort and good function is achieved. All of our orthotic prescriptions and fittings are followed by a review to ensure that the treatment is effective and any fine adjustments can be made.
