What is a protective helmet?

Protective helmets prevent or minimise impact to the wearer's head. Protective helmets can be used for a wide range of reasons and exist in many different styles. This allows the patient and orthotist to work together and select the most appropriate model.

What conditions are protective helmets used for?

Protective helmets can be used for a variety of conditions including:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Seizures
  • Drop fits
  • Hypermobility
  • Craniotomy
  • Autistic spectrum disorders
  • Epilepsy

What types protective helmets are there?

There are a range of ‘off the shelf’ and custom made helmets. Our experienced orthotist will be able to confirm the most appropriate helmet for your child following an assessment.

Protective helmets can be made in a range of materials and style. The styles and materials used are primarily indicated by the functional requirements however we are keen to make the helmets look as cosmetically pleasing as possible.

  • Leather

What is the process to receive a protective helmet?

The process to receive a protective helmet would be:

  • Assessment
  • Measuring / Scanning
  • Fitting
  • Review

Protective helmets are available in both custom and stock sizes. Your orthotist will therefore complete a full assessment, discussing you and your child’s needs, as well as what the protective helmet is required for. This will then help your orthotist to select the most appropriate protective helmet. To ensure the helmet fits perfectly, the orthotist will take a series of measurements and if your helmet is to be custom made your orthotist may also take a scan. The orthotist will be able to offer a fitting appointment when the helmet will be checked to ensure good fit and function. All our orthotics devices come with a complimentary review to check the device is functioning as expected and to make any minor alterations.
