An orthotic is a device that can be purchased off the shelf or made bespoke to suit your child’s needs. It comes in many shapes, sizes and materials. Orthotic intervention can be used to:
- Promote efficient gait and walking patterns
- Prevent damage to the nerves and tissues during rehabilitation, or following injury
- Support musculature and assist function. Replace the function of the damaged/weak musculature
- Adjust the alignment of forces and stresses through the structures in the body to reduce pain and prevent injury from occurring
- Provide structural guidance to assist healthy bone development
- Stabilise joints and assist movement through a healthy range of motion
- Provide protection to sensitive or at risk areas of the body i.e the head or face.
