Lycra garments are made to measure orthotic devices provided to assist with the management of postural control and abnormal tone. The Lycra garments provide support and stability to aid function through compression. This support enables the user to ‘feel’ their arms, legs and body and then use this sensory information to improve their functional ability, this is commonly referred to as proprioception.
Lycra orthoses commonly uses strategically placed reinforced Lycra panelling to help with the alignment of the body. The new positioning stimulates sensory systems in the body and encourages the brain to work in a way that it ensures the muscles operate effectively in their new state of alignment.
Children’s Orthotics provide Lycra Garments for a wide range of conditions, including:
Garments are clinically proven and backed by evidence based research and have shown successes such as pain reduction or the stopping of pain medications as a result of the lycra orthoses.
The alignment assists in recovery by helping the body adapt to its awareness in space, whilst the compression provides stability and warmth, both factors helpful in management or recovery for a wide variety of conditions.
Lycra Gloves - help with alignment of the hand and wrist, conditions that represent as tremors or high or low muscles tone are all conditions a lycra glove can assist with. The glove can rotate the arm into a functional, comfortable position, repositioning the thumb and maintaining correct alignment of the thumb.
Lycra Leggings - lycra leggings improve lower limb function whilst promoting core and pelvic stability. The leggings also improve muscle function, increase sensory awareness and reduce external/ internal hip rotation.
Lycra Shorts - lycra shorts aim to improve lower limb functionality by activating core muscles and realigning the legs. Specialised lycra shorts can also be specifically designed for the rehabilitation of pelvic and groin injuries.
Lycra Shoulder Orthoses - the shoulder orthoses improves posture and range of movement by pulling the shoulder blades back and stabilising the shoulder joints. The lycra shoulder orthoses is effective in treating conditions such as shoulder dislocation, shoulder instability, hypermobility disorders, multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal injury and cerebral palsy.
Lycra socks - lycra socks can help with certain movements that children may struggle with due to muscle weakness, such as dorsiflexion (the action of lifting the foot up). They are also designed to help with pain management from conditions such as plantar fasciitis by helping to stretch out the calf muscles, which in turn relieves tension and pain.
Lycra Suits - the lycra suit aligns the shoulders, torso and hips, improves symmetry and helps stabilise the body and spine. It gives a highly effective level of support whilst remaining non-restrictive
Lycra Vest - the lycra vest influences the posture of the trunk. This type of support is used for children who only require trunk control. This type of support is also very effective for children who benefit from sensory feedback.
The process to receive a lycra orthoses would be:
TYour orthotist will ask you questions about your child’s daily activities and medical history. The paediatric orthotist will undertake a gait examination and watch them move, paying attention to movements at their affected joints and making observations of how their body moves. Following this, your child’s treatment options and goals will be discussed and a prescription made.
Our lycra orthoses are commonly bespoke and made to measure, our orthotists will take a series of measurements to ensure the best possible fit. Your child's lycra can also be personalised to their style with different colours and patterns.
All of our prescriptions and fittings are followed by a review to ensure that the treatment is effective and any adjustments can be made.
