Questions about orthotics

Can children orthotics provide second opinions?

Yes. It is very common for parents and care providers to have a consultation to provide a second opinion. A second opinion can offer peace of mind or sometimes be the catalyst to greater orthotic care.

What is the cost of an orthotic for my child?

It is often difficult to predict how much an orthotic device is likely to cost prior to an assessment. The price of an orthotic normally depends on a number of factors including complexity, materials used and if it is an ‘off the shelf’ or custom made device. Following an assessment with us we will be able to provide exact costs .

How long does it take to receive the orthotic device?

We endeavor to have any recommended orthotic devices fitted as soon a possible. It is difficult to accurately determine this prior to an assessment as this depends on the type of device, complexity and manufacturing process. Following an assessment with our orthotist we will be able to give you an accurate time frame. Suitable fitting appointments can then be arranged.

Why should I choose children’s orthotics?

We have a dedicated team of orthotists with vast experience of pediatric orthotics services. Our team are constantly innovating with new technologies and research with the motivation to provide high quality orthotic services for children. Our team is not restricted by any manufactures and they do not receive any commission.

What to expect when my child attends an initial assessment?

You should expect the initial consultation appointment to last between 30 - 60 minutes. When arriving, our paediatric orthotist will ask questions about your child’s daily activities and medical history. Please bring any relevant records to the consultation. The orthotist will then carry out a full paediatric assessment noting any finding in our record keeping system. The assessment will involve muscle power tests and joint range of movement measurements. If applicable, our orthotist will undertake a gait (how your child walks) examination and observe walking, paying attention to movements at their affected joints and making observations of how their body moves. Following this, your child’s treatment options and goals will be discussed and a prescription made. At this point measurements, scans and casts of the child’s relevant body part will be taken (at no additional cost). All of our prescriptions and fittings are followed by a review appointment to ensure that the treatment is effective and any minor adjustments can be made.

What shall I bring to the initial consultation?

  • It is a good idea to bring a pair of shorts, a tight t shirt and a range of current footwear
  • Any relevant/ available medical notes
  • Any previously supplied orthotics
  • Anything that we help relax your child during the assessment (soft toy/ entertainment tablet)
  • A list of possible goals
